With regard to teachers purchasing supplies...the main point, as I see it, is that purchasing supplies is unique to teachers as far as I know. I'd like to know of other jobs where employees themselves (not the employer) have to provide so much of their own? I'm not talking about lunch or coffee makers or water coolers or other home comforts, but the things you need to do your job. The teachers who have to buy the things that the students need to learn. It's easy to say that the school district is responsible for all that, but the reality is that school districts don't supply everything a teacher needs...and I mean needs not wants.
But, as I say, I'd like to know about other jobs that require the same. I know cops and firefighters have to buy their uniforms, but even that's interesting because they too, like teachers, are public employees. Where in the private sector does this happen?
