Ewww..imagine getting a chair from the side of the road, bringing it to school, sitting on it to read a story to your kids, and then all of a sudden a big ol' rat pops out?? This is reality though: many need to get second hand things, as new stuff is way too costly.
In seriousness, teachers do spend a lot(and clean a lot, too)...I know some who bring in the Swiffer Mop to clean the class. When you are in a class with 20 kids (and even the big ones pick their noses and scratch their butts), you need to have a clean environment. Now, schools are supposed to be clean, and I do praise those janitors who do work hard. I would not go to say that schools are virtually immaculate. The janitors in my district definitely need new mops. I called to let a janitor know that a child spilled a bunch of juice on the hallway floor. He cleaned it, but then the hallway smelled worse than when the juice was there due to the mildewy mop. Then again, this janitor must have cleaned ten other messes before that, so I feel for him.
