I echo your words, TJ. I'm a CPHS alumnus from several decades ago (I suppose if I remembered which decade, it would be all the better; but that's a separate issue). I attended college and grad school with non-CP people who left me wondering how they managed to get promoted out of grade school. Later on, I went to work for many similar people. It was a frustrating experience being with people who felt like they did not have to try hard or acquiesced to a 'good enough' standard rather than committing themselves to some degree of self-improvement. When you come to know these people, they seem to be the ones who come from the various 'vales and 'villes not only of Bergen County, but similar affluent communities across the nation. Ask yourself, "Have I ever seen someone who I have to wonder how they remember they have to breathe every few seconds?" Those people have likely not been touched by the education system of Cliffside Park.
I can say that things were not handed to me at CPHS and that I had to work hard to figure things out. It's easy to criticize something like that, but it is what it is. Was I a good student? H*ll no! In fact, I graduated solidly in the middle of my class. Without that ingrained tenacity, that mildly abrasive quality Mrs. East calls "smacked by the Cliffside stick" - let me call that a native Cliffside Park attitude - I would be a total schnook.
