I don't know of any studies but the teachers who do this say it benefits their teaching environment.
Some would blame societal ills on public schools. We know schools aren't to blame or there would be no successes. How they get there in the opinions of most teachers has more to do with the involvement of the parents than anything else. If the parent is too busy, doesn't care, the loudest who proclaim foul with the schools have kids whose development is slower and often does not measure up to societal demands for success.
What is important to note are those teachers who are willing to provide out of pocket expenses for our children. Those who do not are most likely those who cannot afford to do so. Teachers accept the most brutal of criticisms yet give more to their children than their parents do. Far too many parents are too busy trying to earn a living and that is a societal failure as well. If you can't live in an area, leave and make life in a better place. Better places are out there.
Just some examples: Figure taxes @ 1.3-1.7% of sale depending on any local short term issues:

Then there's:
http://www.realtor.com/Prop/1057660715
Where taxes are 1% of sales price, depending again on any local issues. Local issues are usually lower rate and short term.
Have to go this far? Not really. Almost every state has reasonable real estate, even N.J. The only real issue is the willingness to make changes in one's life for perhaps a better life.Peace
