Migrant public employees.
I remember an NPR story from last summer where a community in California out priced its police department. The interview featured police officers describing their commute from the hinterlands to serve the community in which none of them could afford to live.
Landru's right, to an extent. It is a big country and we all should have some travel away from home under our belts. You can't appreciate the simple things (like good Italian food) until you have had pizza made with Provel cheese, or looked for a nice dinner at a banquet hall and had to accept the Olive Garden. I understand the world does not revolve around Italian food and Greek diners, though it should, but when you get west of Pittsburgh it's pretty much chain restaurants (until you get to Chicago and then it's potato pan pizzas).
I tried to zoom in on that picture of the most expensive home he linked to in Oregon and I was trying to wonder if that was a '78 Chevy van parked on the side of the house. Wonder if it comes with the house?
Although we're longtime CP people, we've spent time in other parts of the country and I can tell you taxpayers always get what they pay for. Sure, there are bad officials who spend irresponsibly and throw our money away (we usually re-elect them because we are incredulous to their actions and only accept ad hominem "you don't want that guy because he's an inexperienced thief, whilst I'm an experienced thief, so vote for me" campaigns), but when you have deficient funding mechanisms, you have ineffective programs. That applies to schools as well as other public initiatives.
