The name is pronounced Y-Reeka. The county is the 5th largest in California with a population of 55,000 people. You always get what you pay for and I've never seen a house that could not be repaired regardless of what was wrong with it. The question is whether the house is worth fixing up. Home is where the heart is. My dad died in 1999. It was difficult being this far away (I don't live in California but I did about 14 years ago) and come back to bury him in Paramus. Some places in Ca are beyond excellent and I consider Yreka one of them. Other places, I wouldn't live in. I miss Cliffside and the great people I new and grew up with. I wouldn't disagree with anything you say about the area. The question is one of being affordable. My sister (CP graduate like me) still lives in NJ and she and her husband struggle. That is not for us. We left in 1970 for Pa. Then onward to 5 more U.S. states before moving here. We've made friends everywhere we've been and will probably retire in one of them. We will leave where we are because our home is worth a lot of money and can be sold to buy something on the west coast yet be able to bank a lot of the change. We won't go back to Bergen County. Too expensive and too crowded are the complaints. My wife grew up in Montana and though she enjoys visiting CP, would never be happy there. When we lived in Southern California, I could have read War & Peace while standing on line to check out at Luckies without ever buying the book. We don't want that either. Many state workers in California are moving to the Yreka area to live and work in their last years. They then just stay there as retired. There are several places, (pockets) of nice places in California. Sonora is one of them, about 50 miles NW of Yosemite. There are some CP folks who live there now. Not much of a winter.
Blue Sheild of California is the health insurance company. A Medicare supplement is less than $100 a month (each person) Individual health insurance is compatible. For those retiring under 65, a decent policy is $1160 a month (man and wife) and $614 a month with a $1500 deductible. You have to do the research. A piece of land with utilities in and a manufactured home is the least expensive way to go. For those who want to spend $1,000,000 it's out there, like everywhere. I'd rather spend $150,000 and put the other $850,000 in my pocket.
Peace
