You have a fairly regionalized job. What I mean is that if you can't find work, or if you want to move on into another position, and you can't find it within reasonable commuting range of the community you reside in, you really don't have much of a choice other than to move on.
I have several friends who have left CP and the North Jersey economy and, although they floated in the economy while they were there, found it impossible to re-enter the economy once they left. They ended up having to move from job to job because of a drive to advance or in reaction to imminent layoffs, and ended up becoming migrant workers. For those who've settled into the economy of a small town (several hundred residents, a church, feed store and ersatz pizzeria being the center of town), they seem to end up stagnating into their jobs, like potted plants.
One of the guys I know actually used to live in CP. He moved out to take a job out west and ended up getting laid off after a couple of years. There were no positions open within 60 miles of where he lived and he had to get an apartment in Philadelphia and work a job there while sending money back to his wife and kids just like his grandfather did back to the Old Country when he came over. He ended up getting a job back in the gopher flats he moved to, but he's miserable there. He tells me he's homesick, but it's like the line in the movie Garden State: "You know that point in your life when you realize that the house that you grew up in isn't really your home anymore? All of the sudden even though you have some place where you can put your stuff that idea of home is gone."
While someone remains in the area, there are many jobs in many fields, all within commuting distance, within which someone can achieve some degree of mobility. It's the difference between fish and people - fish breathe by moving around. They have to in order to get the water through their gills. People breathe by moving the air around them and can remain stationary.
I'm glad you've been successful in achieving that mobility, but I think you expend a tremendous amount of energy each time you advance.
