Cliffside Park, NJ 07010Dear Gerry,
As you know, I’ve written to you many times on this issues and, again, I feel it necessary to bring to your attention the radical change taking place in Cliffside Park.
The aforementioned change, of course, is related to the building boom taking place in town and the associated destruction of green space and trees. The change is quite easy to spot as new duplex homes are sprouting up (in record fashion) in most areas of town. Moreover, the unnecessary removal of street trees can be seen on most blocks in town (most recently 5 50+ year old trees were cut down on both Oregon Ave and Greenmount Ave – the trees, most likely will not be replaced as is happening, similarly, once a duplex home is completed).
Simply put, the trends above (now taking place consistently over the past 10 years) amount to poor and almost non-existent urban planning on the part of your administration. You do not need to look far to see examples of proper urban planning (namely, the Borough of Leonia with an established Tree Shade and Environmental Commission and a Planning Board that aims to preserve older homes) and a total lack thereof (namely, Palisades Park). Given what has been taking place in Cliffside Park, we are on track to become a town much like Palisades Park.
I urge you then to take action both against the builders who are destroying the character of our town and, moreover, enact a commission dedicated to preserving green space and trees (for example, the Borough of Leonia requires that any resident who chooses to remove a tree on a town block replace the given tree).
My hope is that this note is taken seriously and that observable measures are taken. In my view, as the Mayor of Cliffside Park, you have a responsibility to preserve the environmental, aesthetic, and urban qualities of a town that has changed radically over the last ten years. I certainly would not want to be remembered for turning our town in a concrete desert!
Sincerely,
Vincent Scordo, vscordo@bellatlantic.net
I urge everyone on this board to send a simlar note to the town government. Actions needs to be taken; our town is being destroyed and we have an inactive mayor and council who are sitting on their hands...
