Gerry Calabrese
Borough of Cliffside Park
525 Palisade Avenue
Cliffside Park, NJ 07010To the honorable Mayor Gerald Calabrese,
As a new resident and homeowner in Cliffside Park, I would like to advocate for your support of green space zoning, planning and legislation in our borough. Formerly of Cambridge, Massachusetts, I recognize the value that forward-looking urban planning can play on both the beauty and the value of the homes and properties in our community. The “Emerald Necklace” of Boston/Cambridge was a visionary piece of green space planning that has played a huge role in the perceived beauty (and value) of that urban area.
I am wholeheartedly behind the ideas presented to you by my neighbor, Vincent Scordo, (though we’ve never met) regarding protecting the trees and green spaces in this borough with Leonia-style legislation and planning. I am also joining him in promoting a “grass roots” cause for pursuing that agenda, beginning with the Cliffside Park online bulletin board.
Not only do I agree with his suggestions for your administration to impose greater controls over the builders we allow to do business in this town, but I further advocate (as a voter and a taxpayer) for your administration to design and implement a long-term plan for increasing the numbers of trees and green spaces in our town, and for working to beautify the town along the lines I’ve seen in our sister city, Fort Lee. Moreover, I sincerely believe that all builders allowed into CP, including residential and commercial, should be required to create a percentage of green space for every inch of land or space they develop. Before I moved, Cambridge, MA was in the middle of a revision of its collective thinking regarding the “purpose” of common and urban spaces. Moving more towards Dutch and Danish thinking, they began to publicly discuss and design towards “downtown” models that put pedestrians (including bicycles) first, and didn’t just create a pass-through conduit for polluting traffic. Riding bikes and crossing streets in this town (and NJ in general) is more than a little frightening and death defying. With the river and the parks we have in our midst, this town could become first class. Please help to make this town a better investment and community for all of us.
Sincerely,
William S. Weir, Jr.
