In response to the guilty pleas from the Cliffside Park public officials. I don't buy the "I ran out of money" excuse. What happened to the $55,000 that the bouough handed over to the poor defendant two weeks before he was indicted. What happened to the fundraiser money. What about legal aid or a court appointed attorney if you cannot afford one. The taxpaying public who supported these incompetent thieves is entitled to an explanation. These were public officials. Clearly if the Borough of Cliffside Park was willing to fork over $55,000 just days before the indictments, they would surely reimburse any "innocent" official his full salary and legal fees. There is no truth to this lie about running out of money.
Eight defendants gave confessions according to the Bergen Record. In their confessions they implicated each other in the sceme The last defendant held out his plea deal because he found so many holes in the financially strapped defendant admission of guilt. He believed that his former partner in crime was lying in his confession. If this case would have gone to trial it would have been a circus of purgery.
The taxpayers of Cliffside Park took this one on the nose. To assume that we will accept the "I ran out of money" defense is further insult to my intelligence. A review of public record available via the internet reveals that at least one of our eight former officials will receive a disability pension for the trauma that he incurred during this "crisis". Who says crime dosen't pay ?
