Long Live The King (and I don't mean Elvis)

I’ve been a life long Democrat and looking at today’s ballot (for local candidates) all I can say is how disappointed I am.
I saw it coming back when I voted in the primary, but it really hit home today.
I just can’t believe (yeah right, I’ve lived here long enough that I should know better, but hope stands eternal) that we would really have a choice for mayor and council.
Even if no other Democrats wanted to buck the system, I can’t fathom that there are no other candidates running.
I thought things like this only happened in the "old U.S.S.R."
We have a neighbors who are "new" Americans.
We have taken to mentoring their daughter.
We make ourselves available when there are questions about cultural and practical events.
Sort of fill in the blanks when things arise that can’t quite be answered from a book.
Well she just entered high school.
How can I explain this election to her and maintain a straight face????
I’ve attended council meetings, written letters (none of which were ever answered – I thought these folks worked for us) and in short done everything that I thought I should.
Things don’t seem to change.
The mayor and council seem to have their own agenda and it doesn’t feel like they are responding to the needs of their constituents.
In a business world they would probably be fired or in most other towns they would be voted out of office.
What’s wrong with us????
Short of moving (I’m sure some smart-aleck will come on this board and suggest that I do just that or tell us how great they are because they know them for thirty or forty years) I don’t know what to do.
I will stay here, I will vote; I will raise a red flag and make noise if I see something that is just plain wrong.
I love this country; I love the democratic system.
I just can’t believe that this is what our forefathers envisioned.
Thanks for letting me use my First Amendment right (to rant)
