Re Dave B.'s post.
The legislation that could force states to lower the threshold for drunken driving is a victory for Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who introduced the legislation 3 years ago and has fought fierce opposition from the alcohol and restaurant industry.A big cheer for Mr. Lautenberg, who has championed many public safety measures, and a big boo for our elected government (come November 7) who gave the green light for another boozing hangout in our community.
Our children who go to School #6 have now to walk past Border Blues and Rudy's, which have lincenes to sell alcohol. Both are located less than 500 feet from the school. Before Border Blues (BB) opened last month, there was a Chinese restaurant which operated decently, without disturbing the peace of the people living in the area. There were no complaints.
Several $64,000 questions:
-- Who gave the permission for the BB barroom/cocktail lounge/cabaret, which also doubles as a restaurant, to operate until 3 a.m. in a residential area?
-- Who gave the permission for the sprawling parking area behind BB on Gorge Road, which lies in the heart of a residential zone? It used to be a nice, grassy backyard with trees, and now it's an eyesore.
-- How about the noise coming from inebriated patrons leaving BB after midnight? Do they care about our sleep?
-- How about BB becoming a front for gambling, prostitution and drugs right under the nose of the Cliffside Park Police? This is merely a rhetorical question. We're NOT (rpt NOT) saying that BB is a front for anything nor that it will become one. It may be honest business.
But statistically, where booze is the main money earner, illicit undertakings are flourishing.
