I also work in midtown and live in CP.
I mix up my commute.
I take the 'express' bus to and from the city (via river rd) on days when I travel during rush hour. It's not necessarily faster but it is CHEAPER than the ferry commute. $2.55 one way. Average about 45 minutes to Port Authority.
On days I plan to stay in the city past express bus schedule times, I drive to the ferry and pay the extra money. The local buses at night are harsh. $5 ferry one way + $6 parking.
You can opt to take a bus to the ferry for less than $2.55 since it's not a 3 zone fair and if your bus goes along river rd. But if you come home late, you may not have a bus that goes to your home. They do have taxis at the ferry at those times though. It costs about $6-$8 to the various surrounding neighborhoods.
I'd have to say in comparison to living near a path station in hoboken or Jersey City or living at the new 'Luxury Condos' next to the ferry, my commute sucks.
