You overlook one thing - participation in community. Our parents/ grand parents may not have spoken good English, but they made the effort to build their community. They had their ethnic groups, but Italian worked next to Irish and Polish in the factories of Edgewater and Ridgefield - and they lived next door to each other in Cliffside Park. Now the latest generation can claim their success on their progenitors' backs.
The old-timers spent their money patronizing local businesses and raising their families in the area. They were sending their money back to their homeland to bring their families over, not so that they could move back to a third-world country and live like the oppressive class.
It would be different if there was a stronger sense of community and that more of the day workers were working to stay and bring their family. That's what our parents and grandparents did.
I don't know if I can buy that oversimplified 'next wave' deal.
