There are a couple of things going here. First, there has always been an officer assigned to juvenile matters. Now, there's a national program to teach drug abuse and gang resistance that is subsidized by federal grants. Often you have to have an established history of working within other grants to be the recipient of future grants, so this taking advantage of a grant thing is not a bad thing. Next, as this is a national program, this has become the de facto norm. Somebody could make the argument that services are below par because there is no officer who is assigned to this detail. People have already made that statement WITH program participation.

The officer has special training beyond normal police training and might have to go from school to school doing the program. That may not be the case in CP, but it is in other places. DARE and GREAT are programs for younger kids, anyway. Some places use this officer as the "school resource officer" to handle anything from parking problems to whatever comes up when you put a couple of hundred people into a building together. (Read: what's the big deal, and, why does this need to be distorted into the HS turning into a 'police state' or that there is an imminent need for a police presence other than fulfilling a community policing program?)

And, don't forget that this is one person in a fairly large campus. He or she may be the first one on the scene of whatever happens (crime or accident or other emergency), maybe with the school nurse, and he or she would be the one who calls for more help if the responsible adults could not handle the situstion, but it's still one officer. You're not talking about a large presence. Still his or her presence is a DETERRENT, just like the special at Knox and Anderson, or the cars with decals and lights driving up and down the streets. No one thing by itself is effective, but when you add all of them up, there is hopefully a cumulative reduction in the potential for violent crime or the proclivity for a "good kid" to get involved in these activities.

Now, for all this discussion about the "High School Death" that happened during the 1976 school year, WHO ON THIS LIST CAN TELL ME THE NAME OF THE GIRL WHO GOT KILLED???

Since this thread is really about her (or is it?), how pathetic is it that everyone has allowed her to slip into obscure history with not even a mention?
