I received a phone call this afternoon from Ms. Marsha Stoltz of the Bergen News. Apparently, she reads the posts here on Cliffside Online because she called to acknowledge receipt of my faxed letter. She also asked permission to print my letter in her newspaper. After ascertaining that she intended to print the letter in its entirety, I asked if she planned to print an apology for her paper’s lack of discretion.
Her response was an immediate, emphatic and rather snotty “NO!” When I asked why there were no plans for an apology, her response was an equally snotty “I don’t have to get into that with YOU! You’re not the family!” After hanging up on her, I realized that I had given permission to print my letter. I called back and withdrew my consent.
After thinking about it a while, it occurred to me that the reason Ms. Stoltz wants to print our postings is not to try to settle the controversy they’ve caused, but rather to use all of our words as part of a tribute to Frank Biasco. With all the trouble they’ve started I guess they figure everyone will be reading their paper to see what they have to say. More people reading...more circulation. More circulation...more advertising. More advertising...more dollars. Get the picture? All the while, they refuse to accept responsibility for their actions and refuse to apologize to anyone.
As far as I’m concerned, I prefer to see the tribute to Frank in the postings here on Cliffside Online. I prefer to see the tribute to Frank in the faces of all the kids in Cliffside Park who miss him dearly. I prefer to see the tribute to Frank in the tears of the parents of those kids. I prefer to pay tribute to Frank through the words and thoughts we all share.
I sure as hell don’t want to be a part of an afterthought tribute in some fourth rate fish wrap that has become nothing more than Wednesday morning’s front yard litter.
