Wetdowns are a fire department tradition in the volunteer fire departments of the northeast. They are just about unheard of in the boring parts of the country.
Many times the event planners have companies come in just for the promotional value, for example, Anheuser Busch could set up a beer garden for responsible adults. The event's I've seen are usually well corralled by the local police and troublemakers are usually taken away before they get others going. The image of a drunken brawl being incited by a wetdown is very unlikely. Most of the recent ones I've been to have required me to be carded (at my age, I LIKE that) and wear a wrist band.
The second best part of a wetdown is buying the mug - my basement is loaded with dozens of them from Pennsylvania to Long Island. I used to go to a lot of them when I was younger, and hopefully I can get one of these before they're all gone (hey, guys - put two aside for me)! In a lot of places, the mug sales subsidize the cost of the event.
Okay - the best part is the waterfight. Yep, I said waterfight. Watching your hometown guys stand their ground while other visiting fire companies try to wet them down is just about patriotic. This is the fire service equivalent of breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow of a boat to christen it. If I recall correctly, the Telesquirt is an enclosed cab. Unless someone leaves a window open, it should be capable of getting wet without any concern.
It's good to see all this activity in getting the people of the borough out and involved. These community events are what makes the community.
