Read the newspapers. The US Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, ruled that local governments can exercise eminent domain if they feel that more local tax revenues can be generated. The case was brought by the city of New London, CT.
There may not be a stadium planned for Cliffside Park...yet, but the Anderson Avenue project just got the green light. That means that approximately 12 businesses and about 20 families will be displaced and the owners will be forced to take whatever the developers think is "fair market value" for their homes and properties. Not to mention the quality of life the remaining residents of Glen Street will have being forced to look at a nine story brick building each morning instead of the morning sun.
The deal was signed with the developers in December, 2004 and the bond ordinance for 15 million dollars, which your children and grandchildren will be paying for for the next 34 years, was passed in March. All this for a PRIVATE developement.
Guess there'll be room for a few more nail salons to go with the 20 we already have.
Ahhh...progress!
