There really are only three things you can do when you find a situation intolerable:
1) Live with it. Gripe and b***h and type to your heart's content on the internet, but basically it's not going anywhere.
2) Leave it. It's a big country. For a quarter of the price of land in Cliffside Park you can buy a farm with a lake and raise waterfowl, or you can move to anywhere else in the world.
3) Change it. This requires expending energy. Oh no! Do you mean actually DO something other than complain???
If you opt to change it, there really is only one way - pick candidates who support your views and see to it that they are elected into office. Make sure they know you, that you put them there and why you put them there. Then drop by to say "hello" every once in a while so they remember you.
We keep rewarding people for untoward and patronizing behavior by placing them into office consistently. That reinforces their views of their constituency being chattel who will be told how things are going to be rather than be given the ability to participate in the destiny of their homes and lives.
As far as what to do about the redevelopment, given the recent Supreme Court decision, I'm not sure there is anything that can be done except consider it a rigged victory for a handful of wealthy people and a dark day for everyone else. There really is only one way to stop reinforcing the view that residents are schnooks. Residents have one power that is worthless alone, but is collectively powerful: VOTE THEM OUT.
That's it.
There is nothing else that will get anyone's attention the way that will.
A Patti Smith song to go with that
