There are a ton of bright ideas that are done because they are outwardly "good deals" that can be quantified in a list of objectives and accomplishments. There is no after-action review of the efficacy of many of those projects unless they were done with grant monies and there is an overseeing entity, such as the federal Government Accountability Office auditing how wisely the money was spent. The hyperbole to that would be, "Ohhh! We're paving a street! How can you be against paving a street?" Well, if it's known to be torn up, then perhaps the resource should have been moved to some other streets that needed it. But, hey, I don't work there, so there are demands on me to have to think about things like that before initiating a capital project. Even with ripping up fresh pavement - "Oops, we had an emergency. Nothing we could do about it."
I agree with your statement about a "done deal." By the time it ever went public, all of the attorneys had met, all of the legalities and contingencies had been worked out and the 'make it happen' order had been given. Anything else would be a pro forma show. Even a legal appeal now would be out of the question, as the recent decision clearly says that economic development trumps all other interests.
I'm not at all bent about a DPW move. It's still an autonomous entity with respect to Fairview. As long as there is sufficient notice that the arrangement will be terminated, so that the workers won't have to take a garbage truck or payloader home with them if they are forced out on the street. Going back one or two decades, Cliffside Park bought a Vactor truck with Edgewater in a cooperative venture and it seems to have worked well (never heard anything more about it). That's been the precursor to the "R-word." Regionalization has been known to save a lot of money by reducing the duplication of resources in other parts of the country. The only con to that is that there needs to be a cultural change in giving up part of a kingdom and if done without the participation of the people who work those jobs, there will be TREMENDOUS resistance and resentment. I've got to wonder if there were any net savings by eliminating brick and mortar costs associated with the DPW facility versus whatever arrangements were made to share the Fairview facility (I'm supposing there is some sort of lease). Do you suppose there will be a tax reduction to go with those fries? LOL!
