They spent an awful lot of money to remodel the place for a month-to-month tenancy. I'm sure the business owner would have thought twice before spending northward of $50K remodeling the joint if he knew he would never get to put up a Christmas tree.
The problems I see with the DPW move are first, who will be in charge? There will definitely be a turf war between the two bosses. Secondly, you have a non-union shop moving in with a union shop. That should pose some very interesting problems. Thirdly, most of our volunteer fire department works for the DPW. When we get a fire alarm in town while everyone is down the hill, what will that do to the response time?
Further, I'm concerned with the safety of the volunteers responding to the fire house from lower Fairview. It's bad enough that they feel the little blue lights give them the same authority as a police car. However, we've already lost one fire fighter who was on his way to the house (albeit for a false alarm) and taking chances that he shouldn't have been taking. I can't see putting these guys at any more risk. They do a great job as it is, why make it more difficult for them?
Why don't they just invoke eminent domain with the bus garage? The Supreme Court says they can.
