One should have paid attention to the recent elections which occurred in the City of Hackensack which is a non partisan election (you do not run under a political ticket). The City has a new counsel, mayor and deputy mayor. Teaneck is the other municipality that holds elections as such (under the watch of the government considering past history). Perhaps people of Cliffside Park should become more proactive as opposed to reactive. I have attended some meetings of the council and zoning board - very surprised to find a small group of fellow townspeople. It appears no one cares to take an hour or two once a month to show up at these town meetings. And the meetings do start at a reasonable time after usual work hours and supper time. We should attend these meetings to show those who we have elected and who they have hired that we know how to voice our opinions and exercise our power of checks and balances. That we are capable of voting them out as well as impeaching and forcing them to resign. It is power by the people that enables a governing body to have success in a community. When the people do not have the will to wield this power, the community begins to falter. The mayor cannot be found in the office; the council yeses you to death; the zoning and planning boards rub their hands under the table; the city administrator plays poker with DPW; law enforcement becomes invisible; fire departments neglected; board of education passes on the blame to their employees; taxes increases; spending increases; educational test scores drop; playgrounds are memories; crime and vandalism increase; morale and pride decrease. Ultimately, the infrastructure of the community collapses. And then, where are we?
Be Proactive Not Reactive.
Thank you.
