I don't work for Cliffside Park and many of my friends are cops. All that put together really doesn't mean anything. That and $5 will get me a fancy cup of coffee, you know? If I had to describe what I did, I would probably be the guy who ran the zeppole or brasciole stand. Oh yeah - almost forgot - I also slice the onions for the sausage and peppers and fix the dunk tank when it breaks. Anyway, if everyone knew what I did for a living and who I was, I couldn't be a wiseguy every once in a while (and that would make me really boring)!
There have been a lot of things in the paper. That DWI grant is one. Then there was that cellphone store that was robbed on the Avenue; that was in the paper on the 18th. Then there has always been a problem of kids cruising up and down. Years ago, MTV even said Anderson Avenue was the place to go cruising. I think it's meaner now than it was 20 years ago, but we all just tend to remember the nice things. Things happen all of the time, but I'm not aware of anything specific.
I'm not making apologies for anyone, but one of the most dangerous things a cop does is approach a car he or she has stopped. People are sometimes evasive and always nervous. He or she has to make a lot of observations and decisions and is trained to do that in a certain way. All he or she wants is to get off work and go home. He or she is nervous, too, and knows that some genuinely bad people will try to deceive, injure or worse just to get away (all while making sure he or she doesn't get clipped by another car). And then, there are people who are just nasty. It's bad news being nasty. So I'm not the apologist, but car stops are dangerous.
I don't know if they offer it, but every once in a while I see "Citizens' Police Academy" classes offered somewhere where people get to learn about the how's and the why's and maybe even do a ride along. If CP ever has it, or maybe a neighboring town, I think you would really have fun and learn a lot and get to meet people and not just uniforms.
