Everyone needs to learn english. But lets get a couple of things straight.
First, the immigrant generation of the last century did not learn english. It was their kids who learned english. I have neighbors today who, though very nice people, still speak with a heavy italian accent. So much so that it is difficult to understand them. Their children, on the other hand, speak english perfectly. The children of the new spanish speaking immigrants will do the same. How do I know this? Because I am one of those children. My parents have been here 30 years and barely speak english. They worked too hard to put three kids through college to worry about learning english.
Second, since there are so many new immigrants who speak other languages(spanish, polish, russian, portugese, etc...) they need businesses, especially in the service sector, who can speak their language so that those businesses can transact with these immigrants and make money and further help our economy.
There is nothing new in this struggle, we are all from somewhere else, but we all end up being americans. The previous immigrant generations went through this bias, the new immigrant generations are going through it, and the future immigrants will go through it. Believe me, someday we will be voting for a president with the last name of Patel or Singh or Lee or Ramirez. And when we do, it will still be the greatest country in the world.
