[Schools/Education] What is a teacher?

To those who say to teachers, "Get a real job," I suggest that you read Frank McCourt's new book, "Teacher Man." It does a great job of describing the life of a teacher. Here's a quick exerpt:
"In the...classroom you are a drill sergeant, a rabbi, a shoulder to cry on, a disciplinarian, a singer, a low-level scholar, a clerk, a referee, a clown, a counselor, a dress-code enforcer, a conductor, an apologist, a philosopher, a collaborator, a tap dancer, a politician, a therapist, a fool, a traffic cop, a priest, a mother father brother sister uncle aunt, a bookkeeper, a critic, a psychologist, the last straw."
I think we should be careful how we criticize the teacher's job. Yes they have summers off plus the other vacations but we've already seen that for young teachers especially they have to work during those vacations to help their salary. Telling them to get out if they don't like it is short-sighted. They do like it. They wouldn't be there if they didn't. They just want to be paid for what they earn. They earned a degree and often earned another advanced degree.
Everyone deserves a secure and safe job that pays them a living wage. Our society agrees with history's conclusion: education is the basis for a stable society. As such, teachers are essential to that stability.
Don't say teachers shouldn't be paid less. Insist that everyone be paid a living wage.
