Passers-by Wednesday stood and gawked at the damage from a fire the day before at 666 Anderson Ave., while Scotty's Taxi Service was intent on getting back to business as usual.
"We were probably up and running by 7 or 8 a.m.," said Joe Rumore, one of the owners of the taxi service. Its storefront was severely damaged in the fire, which gutted a two-story commercial building on the main street of Cliffside Park.
The blaze, which started about 6 p.m., consumed the Garden State News convenience store on the first floor and a damaged a second-floor lawyer's office. Jenny's Corner, a clothing store on the first floor, was damaged as well.
The taxi service, in operation since 1923, moved overnight and is now operating out of a building adjacent to the site of the fire.
Cliffside Park Fire Chief Frank Poerio said an electrical problem in the ceiling of the convenience store sparked the fire, which was extinguished in about two hours.
Poerio said the building was gutted but the structure seemed secure. Borough Administrator Brian McGuirt said the convenience store owners intend to reopen.
No one was hurt in the blaze, and Poerio said an investigation ruled out arson.
Business owners said they worried the damage would bring traffic and spectators to the area, but hoped that regular customers would not be discouraged.
McGuirt said the town will do everything necessary to help businesses.
"We're going to keep traffic moving any way we can,'' said McGuirt, who said business owners in the affected area have told him they will return.
"We've been in touch with them, and everything's pretty much in control,'' said McGuirt, who said he doesn't expect the fire to have any significant impact on downtown
