[In the News] Disabled Firefighters Fund

Does anyone know about an organization called the Disabled Firefighters Fund? Supposedly they are a worthy charitable organization. The call me every year (last two years), I used to send them small donations. Their tactics and their tones over the phone raised suspicions. They call anytime, any day, day or night. It appears they use automated calling devices with one or two operators. Most times the phone rings but there is no one on the other end, presumably the operator is making another call. On the last call I asked the caller if he is a firefighter, he said yes. When I asked for his badge number he hung up on me, but got the nerve to send me the envelope
Is this a legitimate organization, doe it really help firefighters? It seems to me it is telemarketing scam.
The alleged organization is located in Freehold New Jersey. The pledge letter is signed by M. H. Collyer. I did a google search it just made my suspicions stronger.
Any Input from fellow posters is appreciated.
