I apologize for the typographical errors in my posts! I just noticed as I read my post. I guess I need to back to school for typing!
Seriously, John, your comments are appreciated (hey, freedom of speech, right?) However, you do need to do a bit more investigating. If only you had any idea just how much negotiating goes into renewing and ammending a teacher's contract. I teach in Guttenberg, and we are still in negotiations, for quite some time now, and it is like we have stood still in time. In laymen's terms: we ain't gettin' nowhere.
When teaching contracts are negotiated, a lot is at stake. Even when contracts are negotiated, teachers wind up giving up so much. Many teachers stay where they are because they have been at their jobs for so long. By the time we retire, we will be wondering if we will be paying more for prescriptions and if we will need a part-time job because our pensions are not what we thought it would be. And sometimes, if teachers do get a little, it is taken out of the resources needed for the students, such as cuts in extra-curricular activities and such. To make sure teachers and students are not getting the short end of the stick, budget increases are necessary. Again, if the current federal government got their priorities straight, and stopped cutting educational spending, you would have to worry about these budget questions on the ballot, would you? Maybe NCLB stand for "No Cuts,Less Bull@#*&." Blame the feds, not the locals. The only blame I put on locals is if they do not vote, especially during board of education elections.
Secondly, free public education does not mean schools get free books and teachers work for free. You want an effective school system? Then support it. John,no one likes higher taxes, but there is a flip side: if the taxes mean keeping good teachers and administrators in our Cliffside Park schools districts rather than have them leave, and better resources for our kids, then it is worth it.
