Okay, let's go through my spending itinerary: Yes, I do buy Kleenex, and also Purell for my kids. I buy cleaning wipes and Lysol, too, as schools breed germs. I also buy them gifts for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and the end of the school year, as well as their birthdays.. and not the usual pencil only. (Plus, as a mom,I make gift bags for my son's class for the holidays, and give gifts to his teachers, and also the grade level teachers I work with.) I buy additional books for math, writing, grammar, and reading,in order to supplement what is being taught from the texts. I have also bought additional manipulatives to aid in their learning. Now, we teachers love dollar stores, but these stores are limited in learning aids. Try going to Becker's, Lakeside, or ordering through a catalog for things for your students-talk about costly. But we need these items to help our kids.
I buy additional supplies like pencils and highlighters. Our school does supply us once a month with the basics, but they run out quickly,so it is good to have on hand. I have also bought in snacks for students who do not bring any. Although I feel that it is the responsibility of the parents or guardians to provide snacks for their children, I hate to see a starving kid.
Bottom line: ask any teacher. I would say most spend a lot out of pocket. Schools give you the basics, but in some school districts, you don't even get pencils or paper clips for your class. Advice to all: hit Staples, Walgreen's, Office Depot, and Target in late July until the end of August. Staples has packs of pencils for 12 cents, packs of crayons for 10 cents. Teachers AND parents save a bundle during this time.
I should buy a new chair for myself: I sit in a wooden chair made for a second grader. I think Lincoln sat in it as a kid!
Peace.
